Description
The goal of this project is to develop a regional native plant nursery in fairbanks, alaska, in partnership with the bureau of land management, U.S. Fish and wildlife service, tanana chiefs conference, and other local organizations. The development of a native plant nursery will fill a void in the availability of native plant seedlings and native seed that are required for ecosystem restoration following disturbances such as wildfire, forest fuels management, mining, and erosion. The facility will ensure availability of a biodiverse, ecologically appropriate, and genetically local source of native plants for revegetation needs that can be used by state, federal, tribal, and local land managers. Project activities will include native seed collection from wild populations, seed viability testing and seed cleaning, development of a native plant nursery in fairbanks, production of native seedlings for restoration projects, amplification of native seed, and public outreach and education in fairbanks and neighboring communities. This project will fill a unique role beyond what is currently available in the national nursery and seed directory by facilitating a regional native plant nursery to produce post-disturbance restoration materials for partnering agencies, facilitate and promote the use of a diversity of local native plant stock in public projects, and carry out demonstration, education, and outreach to support the development of native plant propagation in the private agricultural sector.
