Description

Severe wildfires and historical forest management have simplified forest structure in cool-moist forests in the inland northwest and northern rockies, to the detriment of ecosystem health and resilience. Consequences of these forest changes include reduction of habitat for threatened canada lynx (lynx canadensis) and snowshoe hare (lepus americanus), reduced snowpack persistence, and depleted carbon stocks in fire-resistant, large diameter trees. Climate change caused reductions in snow cover duration are further stressing forest and aquatic ecosystems in this region.
