Description
The proposed project strengthens partnerships between the state of utah, the bureau of land management, and partners by supporting site stewardship and coordinating on archaeological and historical data. Dataproject is to continue the shpos ongoing relationship with the BLM as data stewards by providing trainings, logins and passwords for records access, and work for on-the-fly records research. Blms financial support is applied to a part-time employee for routine tasks in support of the BLM mission, freeing up time of the shpo records manager and database specialist to support special projects such as isolated finds database deployment, assessment of additional tools for BLM land managers (such as ingesting more avocational locational information for rock imagery panels), and work with BLM-utah to identify large-scale goals for the next few fiscal years such as incorporation GLO maps into the system, etc. Stewardshipthe proposed project supports ongoing bureau of land management (BLM) and utah state historic preservation office (UT-shpo) missions to protect and preserve cultural heritage, improve understanding of the nations cultural history, provide educational, recreational, and economic opportunities for local communities and the public, and increase native american access to locations important to traditional cultural practices. This will be accomplished by providing additional human resources through the utah cultural site stewardship program (ucss) to the region with the most critical need focusing on maintaining coordinators in key BLM-identified regions. This ongoing project will continue to deepen collaborative partnerships with land managers, and engage local and tribal communities in a targeted way.ucss calls on the public to volunteer to help safeguard cultural resources. In-depth cultural and safety training, interaction with professionals and descendant communities, partnered service projects, and continual development of volunteers has helped the ucss program to grow rapidly in its first 12 months of operation. The ucss program has been successful in its continual engagement with utahs diverse and widespread communities. This includes descendant groups, people living in both rural and urban areas, low income families, and racially diverse and underserved populations. Ucss stewards monitor at-risk heritage resources, track trends in condition, and report their findings promptly. In its first two years of operation ucss has established itself as a leader in public engagement by attracting and training over 360 volunteer stewards, and providing the public with opportunities to participate in and learn about conservation preservation ethics and continual heritage resource education. To best meet the blms mission objectives and to support mindful growth of ucss, we plan on continuing to fund regional ucss coordinators in target locations throughout utah. The ucss regional coordinator will support the BLM in site monitoring efforts by helping to streamline stewardship efforts, develop new stewards, and ensure that high quality monitoring data is submitted securely and in a timely manner.
