THE WESTERN GRAY SQUIRREL RELIES ON OPEN-GROWN OAKS FOR FOOD RESOURCES AND CONNECTIVITY TO CONIFER FORESTS FOR NESTING RESOURCES. MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING THE DIVERSE NATIVE PRAIRIE PLANT COMMUNITY WHICH ARE RESOURCES FOR POLLINATORS AND FOOD FOR WILDLIFE, AND SEEDING WITH APPROPRIATE NATIVE SPECIES IN AREAS DISTURBED BY FIRE WILL INCREASE THE ABUNDANCE AND DIVERSITY OF NATIVE PLANT SPECIES, BOOST INSECT AND POLLINATOR DIVERSITY, AND SUPPORT GRASSLAND BIRDS.
