Description
The award purpose is to support building capacity in southcentral alaska for native plant collection, propagation, and nursery establishment, to produce plant materials for use in environmental restoration. The homer soil and water conservation district (swcd) will host the grant and share funds with the anchorage swcd, which in turn will expand existing partnerships with tribal conservation districts and neighboring swcds, and work with local landowners and farmers to strengthen plant propagation programs across the region. Currently there is a statewide shortage of native seed supply, and seedlings are sourced from outside alaska. Amid increasing fire severity, shifting climatic regimes, and development pressure, alaskas lands and waters, and the wildlife IT supports, are more vulnerable than ever. Expanding green infrastructure capacity by increasing supply of genetically appropriate native plant material will ensure that our ecosystems and livelihoods remain resilient into the future.an initial high-level feasibility study for native plant production will be created with funding from the chugach national forest. Funding from the BLM will be used to build out feasibility reports and address additional tasks listed under technical approach.
