Description

Our goal is to investigate restoration methods to use to reclaim a bentonite mine to enhance pollinator populations. We will do this by surveying for pollinators prior to and after reclamation. We plan to use a project design where we survey for pollinators at a site that will not immediately be reclaimed as a control and sites that are planned for imminent reclamation. Using this design, we can attribute changes to reclamation (changes at the reclaimed sites only) or weather (changes occur at reclaimed and control sites). We will survey for butterflies and bees using established methods we have developed in our laboratory. Using the information, we can estimate what seed mixes and other methods are best to use for reclaiming land to enhance pollinators. This phase of the project includes pollinator sampling prior to reclamation.
