Description

Funding opportunity number: L23AS00020FUNDING opportunity goals text: the proposed project of administering fertility control in the onaqui herd management area (HMA) is in line with the objectives of reducing the annual population growth of wild horses within the HMA. The administering of fertility control vaccines through field darting has been completed on this HMA since 2015. The onaqui HMA currently has a successful program that has reduced the population growth rate from 20 to 10 . This project would continue that work. The success of the program can be measured through the number of mares treated, the population inventories that are conducted every 2-3 years and confirmed with the population recorded by this organization. Whoaf is very particular on their approach to monitor, dart, and catalog the horses and what they do. Part of their approach is to be in frequent contact with BLM over how many and which horses must be darted each year, and report back their success frequently. They use the whims system to keep track of the horses and their treatment which BLM has access too.goals estimated timelines:a) maintain a comprehensive database, continually throughout the year, that includes the identifying marks of each horse in the onaqui mountain HMA using the whims database.B) coordinate with other groups and people who observe and photograph the herd, continually throughout the year, to help build and enhance the database.C) treat 80-110 mares per year with contraception.measures:a) how many mares should be treated with contraception each year.B) which mares should be treated and which not to ensure genetic diversity.C) which contraception vaccine should be used.
