About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey awarded a $227,180 Cooperative Agreement to Geohazards International on March 1, 2026, under CFDA 15.808 (U.S. Geological Survey Research and Data Collection) to reduce disaster impacts and humanitarian aid needs in Haiti and the Dominican Republic by preparing families for geologic hazards in a multi-hazard context.
Geohazards International will deliver seven two-day trainings for 250 local leaders on earthquake, tsunami, and coastal hazard preparedness, who will then train others in community self-reliance and resilience. The recipient will conduct 16 disaster preparedness and first aid workshops, social messaging campaigns and outreach to public institutions and targeted community leaders, and tsunami preparedness outreach supporting NOAA's Tsunami Ready Program. Four information and data products adapted from prior sourcebooks will be developed and formally handed over to government officials for widespread distribution. Awareness raising is targeted at 38 schools, churches, and other social institutions.
The project runs from March 1, 2026 through September 30, 2026, with place of performance in California. Geohazards International anticipates reaching 6,700 direct beneficiaries and 13,300 indirect beneficiaries among Haiti and Dominican Republic government officials, local leaders, school children, and the public in Cap-Haïtien, Mirageâne, and other locations.
