About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded the Alaska Department of Natural Resources a $2,277,453.12 cooperative agreement on March 1, 2026, under the U.S. Geological Survey Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) to support volcano monitoring, data collection, and research efforts of the Alaska Division of Geological Geophysical Surveys as a partner agency of the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
The work encompasses Alaska volcano databases development and data curation focused on the Geologic Database of Information on Volcanoes in Alaska; geologic mapping, volcano hazard studies, and geospatial data management; public engagement through content creation and delivery via the Alaska Volcano Observatory website, social media platforms, a weekly radio program, and online query portals; programming and computing support including high-availability data infrastructure, API development, and comprehensive search web tool construction; management of aviation, marine, and fuel logistics for fieldwork; and assistance in observatory functions and monitoring instrument maintenance. Deliverables include public access through the Alaska Volcano Observatory website to volcano monitoring seismic data, current volcanic activity reports, live web camera views, geochemical datasets, geologic investigation reports, images, eruptive history narratives, and annual reports of volcanic activity. Work is coordinated with the other two Alaska Volcano Observatory partners: the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute.
The period of performance runs from March 1, 2026, through February 28, 2031, with place of performance in Alaska.
Description
Alaska volcano hazard assessment and monitoringperiod of performance: march 1, 2026 through february 28, 2031PROJECT purpose: the alaska volcano hazard assessment and monitoring cooperative agreement between the united states geological survey (USGS) and the state of alaska division of geological geophysical surveys (dggs) supports volcano monitoring, data collection, and research efforts of dggs as a partner agency of the alaska volcano observatory (AVO). Work performed under this agreement is coordinated closely with the other two AVO partners: the united states geological survey (USGS) and the university of alaska fairbanks geophysical institute (UAF GI).activities to be performed include (1) alaska volcano databases development and data curation, with a focus on the geologic database of information on volcanoes in alaska (2) geologic mapping, volcano hazard studies, and geospatial data management (3) engagement with the public through content creation and delivery of information through the alaska volcano observatory website, social media platforms, a weekly radio program, and data availability through on-line query portals at AVO.alaska.EDU (4) programming and computing support tasks in support of alaska volcano observatory research needs, including high-availability data, API development, and ongoing comprehensive search web tool construction (5) management of aviation, marine, and fuel logistics for alaska volcano observatory fieldwork and (6) assistance in observatory functions and monitoring instrument maintenance.deliverables include: (1) through the alaska volcano observatory website, making alaska volcano observatory freely available to the public, including volcano monitoring seismic data, current volcanic activity reports, live web camera views of volcanoes, and alaska volcano information such as geochemical datasets, geologic investigation reports, images, and eruptive history narratives (2) authorship of annual reports of volcanic activity and the alaska volcano observatorys response activities and publication of peer-reviewed free geologic maps of alaska volcanoes (3) weekly radio program broadcast throughout alaska, highlighting volcanic activity in alaska (4) a database of seismic and satellite observations, and continued development for a multimedia database for AVO and other US observatories and (5) a robust web-based internal communications platform for interagency scientists responding to volcanic unrest.intended beneficiaries of the activities and deliverables supported by this cooperative agreement grant are the people of the state of alaska who may be directly impacted by volcanic activity such as ASH fall events and for the general public and aviation community who rely on alaska volcano observatory scientific expertise and volcanic activity alerts to warn of dangerous drifting ASH clouds that affect both local air traffic and international north pacific air routes. Other beneficiaries are academic research scientists who rely on freely available data provided by this grant that help to advance the science of volcanology and volcano risk assessment.subrecipients: n a
