Key deliverables include 1:24,000 to 1:100,000 scale geologic...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $191,470 Project Grant to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to support research investigating the link between modern spring activity and associated paleospring mounds in Death Valley National Park. The three-year grant, awarded July 1, 2021 and set to be completed by June 30, 2024, will fund collaborative research under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). This program supports basic research in the atmospheric, earth, and...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) will provide $180,000 in funding from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028 to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside. The project aims to conduct detailed geological mapping, geochronology, and geochemical analysis in the Sierra Madre region of Wyoming to explore the potential for platinum group element and nickel-copper resources associated...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (CFDA 15.073), will fund the University of Texas at Austin to conduct 1:24,000-scale geologic mapping and geochemical sampling activities across six quadrangles in the alkaline igneous belt of Trans-Pecos, Texas. The $329,962.68 award, spanning September 2024 to August 2027, aims to support rare-earth element assessments in this region by producing detailed...
- This Project Grant award, provided by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050), will fund a collaborative research project to develop and validate a novel method for directly dating deformation within complex polyphase shear zones. The $344,136 award, effective from September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2028, will focus on studying shear zones within two case-study locations in the western United States. The research team, led by the University of Nevada, Reno, will...
PROJECT TITLE: DETAILED MAPPING OF THE IBEX PASS REGION, DEATH VALLEY, CA: CONSTRAINTS FOR NEOGENE DEFORMATION PROJECT PERIOD: 01/14/2026 THROUGH 05/01/2027 THIS PROPOSAL IS TO CONDUCT DETAILED MAPPING IN THE IBEX PASS AREA OF DEATH VALLEY, CA. ADDITIONALLY, THERE IS A COMPONENT OF GEOCHRONOLOGY AND UPDATING OF PREVIOUS MAPPING WITHIN THE STUDY AREA. THE SOUTHERN DEATH VALLEY REGION IS AN IDEAL AREA OF STUDY FOR CONTINENTAL EXTENSION, HOWEVER, THERE ARE STILL MANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE MAGNITUDE AND TIMING OF EXTENSION AND TRANSTENSION IN THE REGION. THE IBEX PASS BASIN CONTAINS A SUITE OF VOLCANIC AND LANDSLIDE DEPOSITS THAT HAVE BEEN USED IN PREVIOUS RECONSTRUCTIONS OF THE REGION. HOWEVER, THERE IS STILL NO CONSENSUS ON THE STRATIGRAPHY OF THE BASIN AND, AS SUCH, THE CORRELATIVE DEPOSITS IN SOUTHERN DEATH VALLEY USED IN PAST RECONSTRUCTIONS. THEREFORE, A DETAILED UNDERSTANDING OF THE DEPOSITS IN IBEX PASS, ALONG WITH THE TIMING OF THEIR DEPOSITION, IS VITAL TO UNDERSTANDING THE EXTENSIONAL HISTORY OF SOUTHERN DEATH VALLEY. THERE IS ALSO A COMPLEX ARRAY OF FAULTS THROUGHOUT IBEX PASS WHICH, WHILE PARTIALLY MAPPED, ARE POORLY CONSTRAINED IN TERMS OF OFFSET AND RELATIVE TIMING. THE PROJECT HEREIN ADDRESSES THESE GAPS BY PROPOSING A MONTH OF DETAILED MAPPING, USING MODERN DIGITAL MAPPING TECHNIQUES, CROSS-SECTION DEVELOPMENT, AND CORRELATION WITH PREVIOUS MAPPING. THIS WORK WILL BE DONE BY A GRADUATE STUDENT AND AN UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT, UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE P.I. MAPPING WILL TAKE PLACE PRIMARILY IN THE IBEX SPRING AND IBEX PASS 7.5? QUADRANGLES, WITH A GEOLOGIC MAP OF THE LOWER IBEX PASS 7.5? QUADRANGLE BEING A PRIMARY DELIVERABLE OF THIS PROJECT. TWO SAMPLES FOR 40AR/39AR GEOCHRONOLOGY AND TWO SAMPLES FOR TEPHROCHRONOLOGY WILL ALSO BE COLLECTED FROM THE STUDY AREA, FOCUSING ON EXPOSED TUFF DEPOSITS WHICH HAVE BEEN USED IN PREVIOUS REGIONAL CORRELATIONS. THESE RESULTS WILL THEN BE COMBINED WITH PREVIOUS MAPPING, WHICH ITSELF WILL BE UPDATED TO THE GEMS SCHEMA AS PART OF THIS PROJECT AND DELIVERED AS AN ESRI GEODATABASE. TAKEN TOGETHER, THIS PROJECT WILL BE A VALUABLE DATASET IN A KEY AREA FOR REGIONAL EXTENSIONAL MODELS.
