About this award

The U.S. Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) a cooperative agreement totaling $1,342,790 on December 15, 2025, under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (STATEMAP, CFDA 15.810) to produce detailed geologic maps and geospatial databases across northeastern and southeastern Oregon.

DOGAMI will construct 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, cross-sections, and time-rock charts for four 7.5-minute quadrangles in the Walla Walla Basin of northeastern Oregon (Ring, Mahon Creek, and New Princeton quadrangles) and the Harney Basin and Lake County regions of southeastern Oregon. Analytical work includes thin-section petrography, X-ray fluorescence geochemical analysis of volcanic rock samples, and radiometric dating (40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb geochronology). DOGAMI will construct GEMS Level 3 ESRI ArcGIS geodatabases for each map and update the statewide Quaternary Fault and Fold Database based on detailed field work and desktop interpretation of available geologic datasets. Deliverables will be GEMS-compliant geologic and derivative maps submitted to the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program to support the U.S. Geoframework Initiative.

The period of performance runs from December 15, 2025, through December 14, 2027. Work is performed in Oregon.

Description

Oregon DOGAMI FY25 statemap project date: 12/15/2025 through 12/14/2027 purpose of award the oregon department of geology and mineral industries (DOGAMI) conducts geologic mapping, creates, and maintains digital geologic databases, and collects high-resolution aerial lidar and geophysical data to characterize the state's unique geology and to enhance the understanding of the state?S geologic resources and hazards. The FY25 USGS statemap award will focus geologic mapping investigations in the walla walla basin of NE oregon and the harney basin and lake county regions of SE oregon. Additional projects will involve updating the quaternary fault and fold database for the entire state and generating a new statemap fact sheet. These proposed projects respond to statemap guidance criteria 1, 4, 5, and 11 to create or convert and submit new, gems-compliant (level 3) geologic and derivative maps to the national cooperative geologic mapping program. The work supports the U.S. Geoframework initiative by providing new geologic and derivative maps, leveraging existing data, and using enhanced databases to foster scientific discovery, public usability, and informed decision making. Activities to be performed for this FY25 statemap award, DOGAMI will construct detailed geologic maps of the four proposed 7.5? Quadrangles and a new statewide derivative map of quaternary-active faults and folds based on detailed field work and desktop interpretation of all available geologic data sets. Mapping will be supported by thin-section petrography, XRF geochemical analyses of volcanic rock samples, and 40AR/39AR and U-PB geochronology. Gems (level 3) esri arcgis? Arcmap? Geodatabases will be constructed for each map. Deliverables and expected outcomes deliverables from this proposed work include: 1:24,000-scale geologic maps, cross-sections, and time-rock charts for the ring 7.5? Quadrangle in the walla walla river basin (project 1), mahon creek and new princeton 7.5? Quadrangles in the harney basin (project 2), and the paisley 7.5? Quadrangle in south-central oregon (project 3); a 1:500,000-scale compilation map and geodatabase of quaternary faults and folds in oregon (project 4); and an updated statemap fact sheet for oregon (project 5). All maps will be delivered as high-quality PDF files accompanied by complete gems (level 3) esri arcgis? Arcmap? Geodatabases. At the completion of the project, submission to the USGS, and external peer review, results will be disseminated through a digital publication in the geological map series (GMS). A total of four published gems-level 3 databases will be delivered to the ngmdb for the new proposed quadrangles cited above for projects 1?3. Intended beneficiaries intended beneficiaries of this work include: (1) stakeholders and decision-makers in state and local governments in oregon; (2) natural resource industries with ongoing exploration activities in oregon for critical minerals and metallic and non-metallic minerals; and (3) academic and other geoscience professionals interested in understanding the geologic and associated mineralization history in oregon.
