About this award

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded $1.66M to the Michigan Center For Shared Solutions & Technology Partnerships under the National Geospatial Program: Building The National Map (CFDA 15.817) cooperative agreement, effective September 15, 2025 through August 31, 2028. The award supports completion of elevation-derived hydrography data development for the Western Upper Peninsula and Southwest regions of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, enabling statewide 3D National Hydrography Program (3DHP) dataset completion for integration into the National Map.

The primary deliverables include hydrography river and stream flowlines, water bodies, and water area features for Level 8 and Level 10 hydrologic units within the project area. The awardee will leverage existing statewide quality Level 2 Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data to develop digital elevation models and create topologically connected hydrography networks with elevation values. Work activities include stream delineation, flow thresholding, data smoothing, collection of culvert data from stakeholders, and capture of lakes and ponds down to approximately 0.25-acre thresholds. The resulting datasets will benefit dozens of state agency programs and multiple federal, state, regional, and local government stakeholders in applications including environmental conservation, flood response, infrastructure planning, and land management.

Description

Intended beneficiaries
Data for these project areas not only benefit dozens of programs across multiple state agencies but will benefit other federal, state, regional and local government stakeholders. The michigan hydrography program currently coordinates the priority areas based on mutual needs and collaboration across various stakeholders for both private and public sectors. Examples of coordination efforts with other programs include, but are not limited to, wetlands mapping projects, flood resiliency projects, water resource management projects and infrastructure planning projects.
