Description

Activities
The specific objective of this research project is to improve the representation of cold season hydrology and in-stream nutrient cycling in SWAT to better represent nutrient source and transport in regions with significant freeze thaw periods. The researchers will achieve the objective by integrating existing versions of the source code having these improvements, some in the prior product SWAT2012 and others in an older version of SWAT , into the latest version of SWAT .deliverables and expected outcomes: along with dissemination of research results through presentation and publication, there are two main deliverables associated with the project:1. Updated SWAT source code with in-stream processing, along with executable, provided to USGS and published online.2. Further updated SWAT source code with cold season hydrology code into SWAT source code, along with executable, provided to USGS and published online.
Intended beneficiaries
This project will lay the groundwork for researchers to utilize the improved SWAT source code across the great lakes and beyond for future land use, management, and climate change studies. Overall, this work sets the stage for the development of SWAT models, source code improvements, and calibration approaches that can be replicated across the great lakes region and beyond. The improved simulation of nutrient pollution sources and transport will aid in developing more effective nutrient management strategies for agricultural watersheds.
