About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Acquisitions and Grants awarded a $615,996 cooperative agreement to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources under the National Geospatial Program: Building The National Map (CFDA 15.817) on September 8, 2025. The three-year project, with performance through August 31, 2028, will deliver repeat Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) elevation data collection across Pierce County, Washington, encompassing 1,712 square miles at QL1 (Quality Level 1) specifications. This re-collection effort addresses the need to refresh approximately half of the county's existing coverage, which was five years old as of the project start date.
Deliverables will include classified point cloud LiDAR data, processed elevation models, and supporting geospatial products that conform to current USGS 3D Elevation Program standards. The project supports the state's LiDAR acquisition plan by providing temporally consistent, county-wide coverage to enable monitoring of land, natural resource, and hydrologic conditions while maintaining data quality and relevance. All collected elevation data will be integrated into the 3D National Topography Model for use by federal, tribal, nonprofit, and public stakeholders across the nation.
Description
Washington state pierce county RE-collectionperiod of performance: 09 08 2025 - 08 31 2028ABSTRACT summary: this project entails collection of pierce county in washington state covering 1,712 square miles with repeat QL1 lidar coverage. Approximately half of the current coverage for pierce county is five years old when the county previously worked with the 3D elevation program in 2020. This project further builds upon the states lidar plan to collect full county areas to keep data updated, relevant, consistent, and maintain a high-quality standard for elevation data. Activities to be performed (do not include links) goals for this project are to partner with the state in order to achieve a five-year refresh rate and provide full, temporally consistent, county-wide coverage to track trends and monitor critical land, natural resource, and hydrologic projects. Deliverables and expected outcomes intended beneficiaries: this data will also be added to the 3D national topography model for the benefit of all federal, tribal, non-profit and public use
