The project, titled "Sea Turtle Demography," will run from February 23, 2024 to February 22, 2027. The key objectives of this project are to: (1) evaluate the effectiveness of various monitoring methods and survey designs for assessing sea turtle nest abundance, (2) refine demographic estimates for loggerhead sea turtles...
- This $121,419 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405) will fund a study on the distribution and habitat use of sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico, particularly in the waters of Louisiana. The principal investigator is Nicole Vollmer, and the primary recipient institution is the University of Miami. The study aims to provide critical insights into important sea...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Unallied Science Program (CFDA 11.472) provides $277,138.00 to the Coonamessett Farm Foundation Inc. The funding will be used to extend existing projects related to sea turtle research goals, including stable isotope analysis of tissues from cold-stunned sea turtles and understanding the distribution of sea turtles within Massachusetts waters. This work supports a larger NOAA and National...
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award for the "At-Risk Freshwater Turtle Conservation and Ecology Project in Massachusetts" is funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Adaptive Science Federal Grant Program (CFDA 15.670). The $314,285.72 award aims to assess the populations and habitats of three endangered turtle species - Blanding's turtles, spotted turtles, and wood turtles - in the Devens Reserve Forces Training Area and surrounding areas. Key activities include...
- This $2,000,000 Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657), will support Mystic Aquarium's efforts to integrate programs of animal care, conservation education, and research to aid in the recovery of endangered and threatened species. The funding will enable Mystic Aquarium to leverage its expertise in marine biology, aquarium operations, and conservation to make...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Unallied Science Program (CFDA 11.472) will fund research on the impacts of environmental change on the sex ratios of Hawaiian green turtles (Chelonia mydas). The $710,664 award to the University of Massachusetts will support the development and application of novel epigenetic markers to determine the primary sex ratios of these sea turtles, using existing samples collected with nest...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded The Ocean Foundation $341,906 under the Broad Agency Announcement federal grant program (CFDA 11.015) to support genetic sampling and data compilation efforts for sea turtle nesting populations from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2023. The key products and services to be delivered include collecting genetic samples from leatherback, green, and hawksbill sea turtle nesting sites to expand baseline nesting datasets defining...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), aims to develop operational forecasting tools to enhance the resilience of protected species in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem in response to climate variability and change. The $888,305 project, running from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027, will focus on two key activities: 1)...
- This Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Broad Agency Announcement (CFDA 11.015) provides $242,735 to The Ocean Foundation to conduct sea turtle conservation research. Key project goals include: Collecting genetic samples from sea turtle nesting populations (leatherbacks, greens, and hawksbills) to expand baseline datasets and define population boundaries Compiling existing datasets to assess bycatch and update population parameters...
RECIPIENT NAME: NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUMCOOPERATIVE AGREEMENT NUMBER: G25AC00453PROJECT TITLE: DATA ANALYSIS TO QUANTIFY THE FINE-SCALE BEHAVIOR AND ENERGY EXPENDITUREOVERALL PROJECT PERIOD: 09 12 2025 - 09 11 2030AWARD PURPOSE: DREDGING OPERATIONS ARE FREQUENTLY CONDUCTED ALONG THE U.S. COASTLINE TO MAINTAIN NAVIGATION CHANNELS AND EXTRACT HIGH-QUALITY SAND FOR BEACH RENOURISHMENT AND SHORELINE RESILIENCE PROJECTS. THESE ACTIVITIES OFTEN OVERLAP WITH THE HABITATS OF ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SEA TURTLES, RAISING CONCERNS ABOUT ACCIDENTAL CAPTURE OR HARM. THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (USGS) IS PARTNERING WITH THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM TO ANALYZE BEHAVIORAL DATA FROM SEA TURTLES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEIR MOVEMENTS AND THE RISKS THEY FACE FROM SUCH OPERATIONS. THIS PROJECT SUPPORTS ONGOING USGS RESEARCH IN THE GULF OF AMERICA AND ATLANTIC OCEAN THAT INFORMS THE BUREAU OF OCEAN ENERGY MANAGEMENT (BOEM) AND OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES MANAGING COASTAL RESOURCES. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF OIL AND GAS RESOURCES IN THE GULF OF AMERICA, ALTERNATE USE PROJECTS, AND COASTAL RESTORATION PROJECTS UTILIZING OCS MARINE MINERALS WILL REQUIRE THE BUREAU OF OCEAN ENERGY MANAGEMENT (BOEM) TO PRODUCE INFORMATION FOR A VARIETY OF NEPA-RELATED DECISION DOCUMENTS, AS WELL AS MAINTAINING COMPLIANCE WITH ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT (ESA). KEMP S RIDLEYS (LEPIDOCHELYS KEMPII) ARE INCLUDED AS AN ENDANGERED SPECIES AND LOGGERHEADS (CARETTA CARETTA) ARE THREATENED UNDER THE PURVIEW OF THE ESA. THIS PROJECT WILL ALLOW BOEM TO ADDRESS INFORMATION GAPS AS IDENTIFIED THROUGH NEPA AND ESA SECTION 7 CONSULTATIONS. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: DELIVERABLES WILL INCLUDE SUMMARIES OF DATA ANALYSES FOR EACH RECOVERED TURTLE ADL DATASET, WITH FIGURES AND TABLES FOR FINAL REPORT AND MANUSCRIPT. DELIVERABLES WILL ALSO INCLUDE SUBMISSION OF AT LEAST ONE MANUSCRIPT, COAUTHORED BY USGS. THE CONTRACTOR WILL PROVIDE ADDITIONAL DATA ANALYSES AND BE AN ACTIVE AND ENGAGED PARTICIPANT IN WRITING UP RESULTS OF ANALYSES FOR FUTURE REPORTS AND PUBLICATIONS IN PEER-REVIEWED SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS AND PRESENTATIONS AT CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS DURING THE OPTION YEARS OF THE AGREEMENT.INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): USGSSUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES: NONE
