About this award

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $440,000 Cooperative Agreement under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) to the University Corporation at Monterey Bay. The project, which runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026, aims to facilitate further development of the OPENET software system and associated evapotranspiration (ET) data production, assessment, and quality assurance. The work will support water resource management planning within the USGS and enhance the capabilities of ET data user communities regarding water management decisions. Key activities include: 1) science coordination and organization of OPENET operations, 2) upgrades and efficiency improvements to the OPENET data services, 3) expansion of OPENET data accuracy assessment methods, 4) evaluation and methods development for enhanced satellite data input and integration, and 5) facilitation of planning, communication, and engagement among the USGS, OPENET Consortium, and end-users. The project team includes scientists from California State University Monterey Bay and NASA Ames Research Center, with additional support from sub-recipients OPENET, Inc. and Habitat Seven.

Description

The work is intended to support water mission planning within USGS and enhance the capabilities of ET data user communities regarding water management decisions. This project will support five elements: 1) science coordination and organization of openet operations, 2) upgrades and efficiency improvements to the openet data services, 3) expansion of openet data accuracy assessment methods to include water balance evaluations, 4) evaluation and methods development for enhanced satellite data input and integration within openet, and 5) facilitation of planning, communication, and targeted engagement among the USGS, openet consortium, and end-users. The project team is led by scientists from california state university monterey BAY (csumb), with in kind support from scientists at NASA ames research center. Additional support will be from award sub-recipients including the non-profit openet, INC. And habitat seven. All parties from the project team have been working within the openet consortium and offer extensive expertise in openet software system architecture, large database management, ET modeling, development of multi-sensor data fusion frameworks, training and outreach, and coordination and management of the openet science team and openet consortium activities.
