About this award

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) was awarded a $119,687 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Water Use and Data Research (WUDR) Program to enhance the quality and usability of West Virginia's water use data. Under this 2-year project, WVDEP will identify and implement several improvements to their Large Quantity User (LQU) database, including establishing a one-to-one primary facility key to resolve duplicate facility IDs, integrating the LQU database with the master permitting site database, and updating the LQU survey form to collect additional details such as population served and water delivery information. These enhancements will significantly improve the usefulness of West Virginia's site-specific water use data for state and national resource management purposes.

Description

West virginia department of environmental protectiontitlewest virginia water use data project 2024LONG titlequality assurance enhancement of west virginia water use data to improve site specific inventory wateruse categories and data transferabilityproject period 9 30 2024 through 9 29 2026THE west virginia department of environmental protection wvdep enforces state and federal environmental laws in west virginia to help protect their air water and land. The wvdep regularly contributes water use data to the U.S. Geological survey to inform national water use estimates. During this project the wvdep will identify several important improvements to wvdeps large quantity user LQU database that are relevant to the secure water act and will significantly improve the usability of reported sitespecific water use data in west virginia. Of primary importance the quality of the data in the LQU database needs to be improved. Duplicate and new IDS are repeatedly assigned to the same facility in the LQU hampering efforts to synthesize the data to benefit the state and national resource management. This project will establish a onetoone primary facility key to fix the past duplicate and new ID issue and create new rules to avoid the issue in the future. The LQU database will also be integrated with the master permitting site database. The LQU survey form will be updated to collect population served amount sold between systems water delivery information for public water suppliers and acres irrigated by system per course for golf course irrigation. Industries will be classified by SIC and NAICS with crosschecks with the inhouse npdes database. PII and public water intake locations will be masked in output of additional data download tools thus saving the wvdep time. The increased quality and additional attributes of the LQU data will benefit multiple categories of water use including public supply irrigation and thermoelectric.as part of the project the wvdep will:1 deliver a project status report every six months of work 2 allow the USGS full access to all data produced during the project and 3 produce a final technical report documenting all work accomplished during the project. The beneficiaries of the work will be the west virginia department of environmental protection water users in west virginia and the overall water use data community.
