This study aims to provide critical insights into important sea turtle habitats to support adaptive management and restoration planning in response to the...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), will support a project to analyze and interpret existing sea turtle relocation trawling data to improve conservation practices. The $153,715 award to the University of Florida will integrate digitized relocation data with satellite telemetry and dredging metadata to quantify return times for relocated turtles, evaluate catch-per-unit-effort metrics, and assess how...
- This federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, under the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.615) program, provides $213,333.34 to the State of Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks (MDWFP) for a 3-year intensive long-term study of alligator snapping turtle (AST) populations. The project has two main components: 1) mark-recapture surveys at five established AST populations across four major river...
- This Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), under the Cooperative Research Program (CFDA 11.472), will provide $108,445.00 to support the activities of the Florida Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (FLSTSSN). The funding will cover partial salary for a position in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Sea Turtle Recovery Program responsible for maintaining the national online sea turtle stranding database. This database...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), is providing $274,289.00 to the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) to support the Sea Turtle Early Restoration Project. The key products and services being delivered under this award include coordination and support for the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network...
- The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $242,213 Cooperative Agreement to the University of South Florida (USF) under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808). The project, titled "Spatial Ecology of Large Marine Vertebrates in the Gulf of America," will run from December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2029. The project will leverage long-term telemetry and mark-recapture datasets, along with newly acquired acoustic and satellite tracking data, to characterize...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Coastal Program (CFDA 15.630) provides $111,020.00 to restore suitable nesting habitat for the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in Puerto Rico. The goal is to reduce threats and enhance the quality of nesting beaches across approximately 128 acres along the southwest, south, and southeast coasts of the island, including Vieques. Planned restoration actions include constructing...
- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $3,176,250 Cooperative Agreement to the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) under the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Program (CFDA 15.658). This 5-year project, starting February 2024, will work to stabilize and increase beach-nesting bird populations in Texas through habitat protection, stewardship, outreach, and monitoring activities. The project focuses on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Birds of Conservation Concern and...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded The Ocean Foundation $341,906 under the Broad Agency Announcement federal grant program (CFDA 11.015) to support genetic sampling and data compilation efforts for sea turtle nesting populations from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2023. The key products and services to be delivered include collecting genetic samples from leatherback, green, and hawksbill sea turtle nesting sites to expand baseline nesting datasets defining...
PROJECT PERIOD: 4 8 15-4 7 25PROJECT TITLE: AERIAL SURVEYS FOR NESTING SEA TURTLE ACTIVITY ALONG THE LOUISIANA COASTTO HELP ASSESS THE INJURY TO NESTING SEA TURTLES FROM THE DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL- A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF TRENDS IN NUMBERS OF SEA TURTLE NESTS LAID EACH YEAR IS NECESSARY. HOWEVER- ACCESSING SOME AREAS THAT MAY SUPPORT TURTLE NESTING- INCLUDING MUCH OF LOUISIANAS COASTLINE AND BARRIER ISLANDS- CREATES CHALLENGES TO CONDUCTING REPEATABLE COST-EFFECTIVE SURVEYS. BECAUSE OF THESE CHALLENGES- FEW ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE OVER THE PAST DECADES TO CONDUCT SUCH SURVEYS DESPITE SPORADIC- MOSTLY ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE OF NESTING. THIS GAP IN NESTING DATA LIMITS OUR ABILITY TO ASSESS TRENDS IN NESTING ACTIVITY. IN 2022- THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES (LDWF) AND THE COASTAL PROTECTION AND RESTORATION AUTHORITY (CPRA) DOCUMENTED 55 SEA TURTLE CRAWLS DURING 10 AERIAL SURVEYS OF THE CHANDELEUR ISLANDS- LOUISIANA. THIS SUGGESTS THAT THE LOUISIANA COAST COULD SUPPORT MORE NESTING THAN PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED. THE AVIAN RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION INSTITUTE (ARCI) HAS BEEN CONDUCTING AERIAL SURVEYS FOR VARIOUS WILDLIFE SPECIES SINCE 1997- INCLUDING SURVEYING FOR SEA TURTLES AND SEA TURTLE NESTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH USGS. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO COLLECT AERIAL IMAGES OVER SANDY BEACHES ALONG THE LOUISIANA COAST TO IDENTIFY NESTING TURTLE CRAWLS AND NESTS. THIS ACTIVITY WILL SUPPORT USGSS ROLE IN THE NATURAL RESOURCE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND RESTORATION (NRDAR) FUNDED PROJECT TITLED: BASELINE DOCUMENTATION OF SEA TURTLE NESTING IN LOUISIANA- WHICH WILL HELP CONDUCT RESTORATION ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE AND INCREASE SEA TURTLE NESTING ACTIVITY IN LOUISIANA. AERIAL IMAGING SURVEYS WILL OCCUR OVER A 3-WEEK PERIOD EACH YEAR OVER ALL SANDY BEACH HABITAT IN LOUISIANA. FLIGHTS WILL BE FLOWN IN A CESSNA-182 AND FLOWN BY AN EXPERIENCE PILOT AND CO-PILOT. THE PLANE WILL HAVE A CAMERA INSIDE THAT IS SHOOTING PHOTOGRAPHS STRAIGHT DOWN THROUGH A HOLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE AIRCRAFT. ONE PHOTOGRAPH WILL BE TAKEN EVERY SECOND AND EACH PHOTOGRAPH WILL HAVE AN ASSOCIATED GPS LOCATION. ALL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN DURING SURVEY WILL BE EXAMINED FOR SEA TURTLE CRAWLS BY EXPERIENCED BIOLOGISTS.
