About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Research Units (CFDA 15.812) program provides $103,045.28 to Oregon State University to build statistical models for estimating marine survival of interior Columbia River fall and spring Chinook salmon. The recipient will work with the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center to develop these models, which will incorporate various data sources such as PIT tag and coded wire tag data, stock assessments, and catch per unit effort metrics. The statistical models will then be integrated into existing Chinook salmon life-cycle models to estimate salmon viability under projected climate change and harvest regulation scenarios. Key deliverables include the statistical model, technical documentation, commented code, and training for agency staff. The project will run from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2025.
Description
Multi-species analysis of pacific northwest chinook salmon marine survival project period: 10 01 2023 - 09 30 2025PROJECT abstract: recipient will build statistical models for interior columbia fall and spring chinook marine survival. This model will be fit to actual measured data for columbia river and coastal chinook salmon and will be integrated into full life cycle models to compare salmon viability under a variety of scenarios of climate change and management actions. Activities to be performed - recipient will work with scientists in the northwest fisheries science center to develop a statistical model for estimating chinook salmon using a variety of data sources, including PIT tag and coded wire tag data for salmon, stock assessments, as well as catch per unit effort and other indices incorporate the estimates into existing chinook salmon life-cycle models and use climate projections from the cascadia regional ocean model and estimated range shifts of species that interact with chinook salmon to estimate salmon viability under changing climate and harvest regulation. Deliverables and expected outcomes -recipient will provide northwest fisheries science center with the following deliverables:1)a model of intermediate complexity for interior columbia spring and fall chinook salmon in R2)technical documentation for the model, sufficient for technical memorandum and peer-review methods DESCRIPTION3)fully commented code including a readme flow chart file for public release.4)training of agency staff, in person or remotely, in model rationale, computer coding, and conduction quantitative sensitivity analyses with R. Intended beneficiary(IES) -NOAA northwest fisheries science center subrecipient activities, if known or specified at the time of awardnone
