Description

Activities
The objectives of this agreement are to collect, compile, and format high-resolution groundwater temperature data. Historical data will be compiled from an existing environmental monitoring network of drilled groundwater wells in the manistee national forest, adjacent to the white river, michigan, which have been instrumented for collection of environmental data for the past 12 years. Hourly groundwater temperatures are included in the data collected. In addition, data will continue to be collected for the duration of this agreement. Finally, potential sites will be identified to supplement the historical dataset. Stream dataloggers will be installed at these new sites within the white river, collecting recent groundwaterelevation and temperature.deliverables and expected outcomes: this project will provide the long-term groundwatertemperature data collected along the white river in order to model surface and groundwatertemperatures within the watershed. Simulating observed historical temperature changes ingroundwater and surface water will reduce uncertainty in the projections of groundwater andstream temperatures under various climate change scenarios.
Intended beneficiaries
This information will help local natural resource managers in the forestservice and department of natural resources in adapting to a warmer climate by providinginformation on temperature change effects on thermal refugia in the stream. Ideally, managerswill develop better stream management strategies for land acquisitions, logging operations, andmanagement of the stream-adjacent landscape. The sooner these climate adaptation andmitigation strategies are developed and implemented, the more successful they will be atpreserving these important streams and fish populations, leading to improved ecosystem andeconomic outcomes for these regions.
