PROJECT TITLE: TROUTSPOTTER: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR MARK-RECAPTURE POPULATION STUDIESPROJECT PERIOD: 9 1 2023 THROUGH 8 31 2024AWARD PURPOSE: TROUTSPOTTER IS AN AI-ENABLED PROJECT TO SIGNIFICANTLY ADVANCE THE WAY MARINE BIOLOGISTS, MANAGEMENT AGENCIES, AND RESEARCHERS COLLECT, ANALYZE, AND SHARE DATA FOR FRESHWATER TROUT POPULATION ASSESSMENT. TRADITIONALLY, MARINE BIOLOGISTS HAVE FACED SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES IN COLLECTING AND ANALYZING MARK-RECAPTURE DATA TO ESTIMATE WILDLIFE POPULATION SIZES FOR FISH. THE PROCESS IS TIME-CONSUMING, PRONE TO ERRORS, AND LACKS UNIFIED DATA STRUCTURES AND METHODS FOR COLLABORATION, DATA SHARING, AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT. THIS FRAGMENTED APPROACH HAMPERS SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS, INHIBITS DATA ACCESSIBILITY, AND LIMITS THE DEVELOPMENT OF DATA-DRIVEN, EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION PLANS. TROUTSPOTTERS INTEGRATED DATA MANAGEMENT AND AI TECHNOLOGY WILL SPEED AND SCALE RESEARCHERS AND MANAGEMENT AUTHORITIES ABILITY TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE DATA FOR TROUT MARK-RECAPTURE ANALYSES, ALLOWING FOR IMPROVED POPULATION ASSESSMENTS AND DATA-DRIVEN CONSERVATION PLANNING.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE RECIPEINT WILL CUSTOMIZE THE OPEN SOURCE CODEX PLATFORM TO CREATE A WEB-BASED, CENTRALIZED AND COLLABORATIVE DATABASE (TROUTSPOTTER) THAT FACILITATES THE STUDY OF MULTIPLE SPECIES OF TROUT AND PROMOTES COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION EFFORTS. TROUTSPOTTER PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION BY OFFERING A CLOUD-BASED PLATFORM WHERE RESEARCHERS CAN EASILY INPUT, STORE, AND ACCESS TROUT DATA. THE PLATFORM S CORE FEATURES WILL INCLUDE: DATA COLLECTION, DATA MANAGEMENT, COLLABORATIVE SHARING AMONG AGENCIES, DATA ANALYSIS AND EXPORT, AI AND COMPUTER VISION FOR FISH DETECTION AND INDIVIDUAL ID IN SUBMITTED PHOTOGRAPHS. WILD ME ENGINEERS WILL ALSO CUSTOM TRAIN MULTIPLE MACHINE LEARNING MODELS WITH PROVIDED DATA TO SPEED AND SCALE DATA CURATION.DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE RECIPIENT WILL PROVIDE A CODEX SOFTWARE INSTANCE CUSTOMIZED FOR MULTI-SPECIES TROUT RESEARCH AS WELL AS INTEGRATED MACHINE LEARNING MODELS THAT CAN FIND TROUT IN PHOTOGRAPHS, LABEL THEIR VIEWPOINTS AND ORIENTATIONS, AND PASS THE RELATED PIXELS AND METADATA ON TO INDIVIDUAL ID ALGORITHMS FOR MARK-RECAPTURE ANALYSIS INSIDE THE CODEX SOFTWARE.INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES): THE COLLABORATIVE TROUTSPOTTER PROJECT WILL BENEFIT POPULATION BIOLOGISTS AND MANAGEMENT AUTHORITIES (ACADEMIC, FEDERAL, STATE, TRIBAL AND NONPROFIT) SEEKING TO BENEFIT FROM TRADITIONAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AS WELL AS CITIZEN SCIENCE DATA COLLECTION, IMPROVING THEIR COLLABORATIVE ACCESS TO HIGH QUALITY AND AI-CURATED DATA ABOUT TROUT.
