PROJECT TITLE: 3-D STRATIGRAPHIC DATABASE OF THE U.S. CONTINENTAL MARGINPROJECT PERIOD: 09 01 2023 - 08 31 2025AWARD PURPOSETHE EASTERN MARGIN OF NORTH AMERICA IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A PASSIVE CONTINENTAL MARGIN. IT HAD BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MANY STUDIES SINCE THE LATE 1930 S. YET, A GAP IN KNOWLEDGE REMAINS REGARDING THE NATURE AND TIMING OF DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE BREAKUP. THE LOCATION OF THE GRABENS ACROSS MARGIN IS ONLY KNOWN IN GENERAL TERMS, SIMILAR TO THEIR INTERNAL STRUCTURE. IN ADDITION, THE STRATIGRAPHIC DIVISION OF THE SEDIMENTARY SUCCESSION POSTDATING THE BREAKUP HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED SINCE THE EARLY 1990 S. SEVERAL MAJOR ADVANCES THAT OCCURRED SINCE THEN CALL FOR RE-EVALUATION OF THE STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY OF THE CONTINENTAL MARGIN: SEISMIC REFLECTION DATA COVERAGE IS DENSER TODAY THAN IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY IT IS READILY ANALYZED BY ADVANCED SEISMIC INTERPRETATION SOFTWARE THAT WERE NOT AVAILABLE 40 YEARS AGO. SUCH AN ANALYSIS WOULD ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE ADVANCES IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF RIFTING PROCESSES.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMEDPROPOSED ACTIVITIES TO BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THIS PROJECT ARE TO EXPORT AND ARCHIVE THE RESULTS OF A STRATIGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF THE EASTERN CONTINENTAL MARGIN OF THE UNITES STATES. THE AREA HASALREADY BEEN MAPPED BY THE RECIPIENT DURING A PREVIOUS COLLABORATION WITH THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMESTHE SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT WILL BE MEASURED BY THE PUBLICATION OF THE DATABASE IN A USGS VENUE FOR DATA DISSEMINATION, WHICH WILL INCLUDE STRUCTURAL AND ISOPACH GRIDS AND THE SEISMIC VELOCITY DATAUSED TO CONVERT TIME GRIDS TO DEPTH. THESE COMPREHENSIVE GRIDS WILL COVER AN AREA LARGER THAN 850,000 KM2 SPANNING FROM THE CANADIAN BORDER TO CAPE HATTERAS, AND FROM THE SHORELINE TO WATER DEPTHS OF 4000 M AND WILL INCLUDE THE BASE AND TOPS OF THE EARTH CRUST AND SEVEN SEDIMENTARY LAYERS BETWEEN THE CRUST AND THE SEA FLOOR.INTENDED BENEFICIARY(IES)THE PROPOSED WORK WILL PROVIDE THE NECESSARY DATABASE FOR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, THE PRIVATE SECTOR (FOSSIL AND RENEWABLE ENERGY, MARINE INFRASTRUCTURE) AND ACADEMIC GROUPS TO CARRY OUT THEIR OWN ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE AND STRATIGRAPHY OF THE U.S. MARGIN.
