About this award
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $199,283 Cooperative Agreement to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) under the federal Water Use and Data Research program (CFDA 15.981). The 2-year project aims to: 1) Improve the quality control of existing water use data in WDNR's database by automating data validation checks; 2) Implement new quality control processes to validate water use data as it is entered into the state database annually; 3) Add historical water withdrawal records to the database and associate them with well construction details to better identify aquifer sources; and 4) Conduct a feasibility analysis for developing a statewide GIS layer mapping municipal water supply service areas in Wisconsin. The project goals align with WDNR's water use data and research priorities, and the resulting methodologies and tools will potentially benefit the USGS and other state water resource agencies.
Description
Title: wisconsin water use data quality control project FY2024LONG title: quality control implementation on existing and future self-reported monthly water withdrawals in support of wisconsin department of natural resources water use database.project period 9 1 2023 through 8 31 2025THE wisconsin department of natural resources (DNR) is a current provider of water use information to the public including the U.S. Geological survey (USGS). This project will implement automated quality control checks on both existing and future water use data entries. In addition to improving existing data, the wisconsin DNR will implement quality control checks upon data as IT is entered into the state s database every year.during this project, the wisconsin DNR will require modification of existing database tables and schema. These modifications will improve the robustness of the existing database by adding historical water use reports made prior to 2010 to the database, as well as associating older high-capacity wells with well construction reports, which will improve the identification of geology and aquifers being utilized for groundwater withdrawals. This objective would assist wdnr with associating a withdrawal with an aquifer (USGS tier 1 irrigation golf courses, industrial). Additionally, the project will evaluate the feasibility of developing a statewide spatial map of wisconsins more than 600 municipal water supply service areas. This feasibility analysis will clarify the business needs for a statewide water supply service area GIS layer, create a methodology for developing that statewide layer, and include a pilot project to identify potentially common issues with integrating service areas from various sources. This objective would assist wdnr with improving population served estimates and determining interbasin transfers (USGS tier 3 public supply).overall, the project identified tasks relevant to state priorities within the wisconsin water-use data and research workplan. This project includes elements that can be repeatable by other state water-resource agencies. Additionally, the usage of python scripts to identify outliers is innovative, and these scripts will be potentially beneficial to the USGS and other state agencies. As part of the project, wisconsin DNR will: (1) to improve existing data quality control (2) implement new data entry quality control (3) add historical water withdrawal records and, (4) conduct a feasibility analysis for developing a statewide GIS layer of municipal water supply service areas. The beneficiaries of the work will be the: wisconsin DNR, water users within wisconsin, and users of data provided by the USGS national water information system.
