Description

Title: illinois state water survey 2023 wudr projectlong title: enhancing iwip s water use classification capabilities to align with USGS data standards and better assist umrba in water availability assessmentsproject period 9 1 2023 through 8 31 2025THE illinois state water survey (isws) maintains the illinois water inventory program (iwip), the largest repository for water well, intake records, and withdrawals and use data in the state of illinois. The isws is also the only organization in illinois that tracks water use from industrial and commercial interests. The isws currently provides the united states geological survey (USGS) with an updated list of wells and intakes in the state of illinois every five years during the compilation of water use summary reports. During this project, isws will review the standard industrial classification (SIC) codes of wells within the iwip database that were flagged as outliers and assign them the appropriate SIC code based on documentation, past reports, and discussion with the owner operator of the well (if necessary). Once the SIC code has been confirmed and corrected, the points water use will be available for use by isws scientists in research projects and for fulfilling requests for water-related information from constituents. This will help the systematic process of separating water withdrawal data into USGS water use categories, resulting in more comprehensive and usable water use categories that can be accessed by planners, researchers, managers and the general public in illinois and across the nation. Overall, the project includes tasks relevant to state priorities within the illinois water-use data and research workplan. The project tasks also align with isws and USGS water use goals. As part of the project, all generated data will be available to the USGS upon request in machine readable format. Point withdrawal data will be available for public water supplies and aggregated withdrawal data at a county or watershed level will be available for non-public water supplies. The beneficiaries of the work will be the: illinois state water survey, water users within illinois, and users of data provided by the USGS national water information system.
