Description

Peshastin creek and its watershed have experienced a century of resource extraction (logging and mining) and the stream has been fundamentally altered due to road building, agriculture, land clearing, and rural residential development along the shoreline and throughout the floodplain. Watershed and stream process are, and will continue to be, a challenge to restore. Despite habitat impairments, peshastin creek is the most productive stream for wild steelhead in the wenatchee subbasin, and this project will benefit every life stage for this threatened species. The cascade columbia fisheries enhancement group (ccfeg) will work in conjunction with private landowners to restore 4.8 acres of native vegetation to the floodplain of peshastin creek, including 2.2 acres of riparian habitat. This will increase shade, decrease localized stream temperatures, and provide long-term inputs of nutrients and woody debris to peshastin creek which is severely lacking these attributes due to the factors aforementioned. This work will complement other completed and planned projects in the area which collectively will increase habitat quantity and quality for threatened and endangered salmonids. This is an incredible opportunity to conduct a large scale aquatic habitat restoration project with cooperative private landowners.
