THE FIR ISLAND CREOSOTE REMOVAL PROJECT WILL REMOVE 17 DERELICT CREOSOTE PILINGS FROM A PRIVATE LANDOWNER?S PROPERTY ON THE TIDAL AREA OF SOUTH FORK OF THE SKAGIT RIVER DELTA AND IMPROVE THE RIPARIAN AREA ADJACENT TO THE CREOSOTE REMOVAL SITE LOCATED ALONG 500-LINEAR-FEET OF THE RIVER. THE PILINGS ARE NO LONGER USED BY THE LANDOWNERS AND ARE LEACHING CHEMICALS INTO THE SALISH SEA. THE PRIMARY COMPONENT OF CREOSOTE, POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHS), CAN NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE HEALTH OF MARINE LIFE AND HUMANS, AND TOXICITY MAY BE MOBILIZED INTO HIGHER TROPHIC LEVELS VIA THE FOOD CHAIN (HEINTZ 2007). ACCORDING TO WA DNR PUBLICATIONS, CHEMICALS FOUND IN CREOSOTE PILINGS HARM JUVENILE SALMONIDS BY CHANGING PATTERNS OF GROWTH AND METABOLISM, AND FISH THAT ARE EXPOSED TO HIGHER DOSES EXPERIENCE DELAYED MORTALITY SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER EXPOSURE (DNR 2007). PAHS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE EGG HATCHING SUCCESS OF PACIFIC HERRING AND CONTAMINANTS HAVE ALSO BEEN SHOWN TO BIOACCUMULATE IN GREATER CONCENTRATIONS UP THE FOOD CHAIN TO LARGER MARINE LIFE SUCH AS SALMONIDS AND ORCAS (WEST ET AL. 2019).
