Description
The monarch butterfly overwintering site is degraded and was further impacted by the 2025 palisades fire which burned eucalyptus trees in the core zone. A planting plan was completed to restore the site, increase wind protection in the shelter zone, and provide nectar plants for overwintering butterflies. This project will restore a degraded monarch butterfly overwintering site and create high quality habitat for monarch butterfly recovery. The restoration plan will enhance the monarch overwintering and shelter zones by removing non-native invasive plants and planting approximately 604 native plants. The project activities will include weeding and planting and watering approximately 604 native plants. This project will support the implementation of the coastal habitat conservation act of 2023. In addition, IT will help achieve goal 3 of the department of interior 2026-2030 draft strategic plan framework. This project will achieve goal 3 by focusing on the following big ideas: ecosystems are healthy, balanced, and thrive eliminate invasives and support local decisions. This will be done by implementing the following relevant key strategies: manage invasive species, support species populations and health, and support CO-management with local stakeholders.
