Description
Currently, half of the two-acre pond and surrounding area is overgrown with invasive vegetation. This project will achieve the following objectives: 1) reduce presence of invasive vegetation 2) reduce presence of invasive aquatic animal species and 3) promote recruitment of native aquatic fish and invertebrates that are recreationally and culturally important. Funds will support a contracted project coordinator and field coordinator. Project activities will include invasive vegetation clearing, native vegetation planting, invasive fish removal, fish population monitoring, and water quality monitoring. We expect the removal of invasive vegetation and invasive aquatic animal species will result in increased populations of native aquatic species, both those already found in kalou and additional aquatic fish and invertebrate species who will move into newly RE-opened habitat. Restoration activities will also benefit the four species of endangered native waterbirds already present in kalou and the waialee wetland complex. The dense stands of invasive aquatic grasses which are not currently usable will be removed and replaced with low-stature native plants to create foraging and nesting habitat for endangered waterbirds. All project activities will be summarized in a final report submission.
