THE ANAPUKA DUNE RESTORATION SITE GAINED PROTECTION FROM A 1.1 MILE PREDATOR PROOF FENCE IN APRIL 2024 WHICH IS ALREADY FACILITATING CLOSE TO A 150 PERCENT INCREASE IN WEDGETAIL SHEARWATERS IN THE NESTING SITE YEAR OVER YEAR. THIS PROPOSAL AIMS TO CLEAR 2.1 ACRES ADJACENT TO THE NESTING SITE IN FEDERALLY DESIGNATED CRITICAL HABITAT. THE RESTORATION PROCESS INVOLVES REMOVAL OF PROSOPIS SPECIES AND REPLANTING WITH A DIVERSE VARIETY OF NATIVE SPECIES WHILE CONDUCTING INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL AND MANAGEMENT UNTIL 100 PERCENT COVER IS ACHIEVED. INVASIVE SPECIES MANAGEMENT WILL CONTINUE AFTER THIS GOAL OF 100 PERCENT COVER IS ACCOMPLISHED. THE RESTORED ECOSYSTEM WILL PROVIDE FORAGE HABITAT FOR THE MULTIPLE HYLAEUS SPECIES ON SITE, AND WILL ALSO PROVIDE HABITAT FOR NUMEROUS RARE PLANT SPECIES FROM ON SITE TO SPREAD, INCLUDING A SELF SUSTAINING AND NATURALLY INCREASING POPULATION OF SESBANIA TOMENTOSA ADJACENT TO THE PROJECT LOCATION.
