Description
This project will construct beaver DAM analogues and use other low-tech process-based restoration techniques to reduce channel incision and restore floodplain connectivity in a quarter-mile reach of west tule creek, a high priority tributary to hayfork creek and the south fork trinity river. The constructed structures will slow and spread stream flows and aggrade sediment to rebuild the incised channel. This will RE-engage the floodplain to improve juvenile salmon and steelhead rearing habitat, improve riparian habitat conditions, and increase groundwater recharge. This project will benefit the following anadromous fish species: coho salmon (federal and state ESA threatened), steelhead (state species of concern), pacific lamprey (tribal trust species, state species of concern). This project will achieve DOI proposed strategic objective 3.3 ?restore lands and waters? By restoring high-quality salmon habitat, improving summer stream flows and groundwater storage, and preventing erosion. IT will also achieve DOI proposed strategic objective 4.2 "work collaboratively with states, partners, and governments" by supporting public-private partnerships.
