Description
This project will construct beaver DAM analogues and use other low-tech process-based restoration techniques to reduce channel incision and restore floodplain connectivity in a spring-FED tributary to hayfork creek, a tributary to the south fork trinity river. The constructed structures will slow and spread stream flows and aggrade sediment to rebuild the incised channel. This will RE-engage the floodplain to enhance riparian habitat and groundwater storage, improving summer stream flows. This project will serve as a demonstration project for these low-cost techniques - the site has high visual exposure to surrounding landowners with similar channel incision problems and will provide an opportunity with a willing landowner to demonstrate these techniques and how they are compatible with ranching activities and related land use. This project will benefit the following anadromous fish species: coho salmon (federal and state ESA threatened), steelhead (state species of concern), pacific lamprey (tribal trust species, state species of concern). This project will achieve DOI proposed strategic objective 3.3 ?restore lands and waters? By restoring high-quality salmon habitat, improving summer stream flows and groundwater storage, and preventing erosion. IT will also achieve DOI proposed strategic objective 4.2 "work collaboratively with states, partners, and governments" by supporting public-private partnerships.
