Description
The goal is to deepen the understanding of monarch butterfly use of overwintering habitat using radio telemetry tag technology. Monarchs will be individually tagged with radio telemetry tags and their movement will be studied using a combination of stationary (motus tower) and mobile devices (handheld receivers and a cell phone APP). This project will use the data to examine monarch movement in relation to home ranges and study their site fidelity around active overwintering sites and nectar resources. Weather and wind data collected at the site will be used in conjunction with the movement data to further understand monarch habitat needs. This project will achieve goal 3: enjoy our natural resources while ensuring they remain sound and sustainable by supporting species populations and health, using sound science to manage species, and supporting CO-management with local stakeholders and tribes. This project achieves goals outlined in the coastal habitat conservation act of 2023.
