Description

This project will provide trust resource public benefits through improving upland woodland habitat for the benefit of multiple federal trust species, including the federally proposed monarch butterfly, migratory birds, and other pollinators. The objective of this project is to restore and enhance some of the historic savanna grassland communities that currently exist as juniper scrubland by mechanically treating invading juniper and other woody species, concomitantly stimulating herbaceous grasses, forbs, and shrubs. Upland habitat enhancement has been designed to improve cover of desirable herbaceous species including warm-season perennial grasses that should improve rainwater retention, promote soil conservation, and otherwise provide for improved watershed health, all of which are showing benefits from past habitat work.additionally, improved grassland health and concomitant watershed enhancement could ultimately benefit water quality and quantity for the benefit of numerous fish and wildlife species.
