Description
Our focus is to conduct outreach events that encourage habitat restoration activities for pollinators, involving landowners from the northwestern-central and southwestern-central focus areas of the partners for fish and wildlife program, puerto rico. To accompany the outreach activities, we are proposing the design, production, and distribution of educational materials to inform and guide potential participants about the importance of restoring habitat conditions to benefit diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. Our proposal includes a small production of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants attractive to pollinators, which will be distributed for educational purposes in the outreach events. These efforts to restore pollinators habitats will have direct positive effects on federally listed species and other local species of greatest conservation need, including, but not limited to, the atlantea tulita (harlequin butterfly), danaus plexippus portoricensis (monarch butterfly), antillea pelops (antillean crescent), monophyllus redmani (greater antillean long-tongued BAT), native BEE species, and other hummingbird species. The actions outlined in our proposal will complement other ongoing landscape-level efforts in this region, where envirosurvey, INC. Has been actively involved since 2002, including the shade-grown coffee restoration initiative and the habitat restoration of atlantea tulita (harlequin butterfly). The targeted conservation areas are agricultural lands that provide habitat for numerous wildlife species, such as resident and migratory birds, the threatened elfin-woods warbler, and ultimately, the endangered puerto rican parrot. We suggest the following activities for phase 1 of the pollinators initiative to be performed in two years: 1) conduct eight outreach workshops for approximately 200 private landowners in the northwestern-central and southwestern-central focus areas of the partners for fish and wildlife program in puerto rico. The workshops will explain the importance and need for landowners participation in the initiatives strategy to restore habitat conditions for diurnal and nocturnal pollinators, including restoring essential habitat for the remaining populations of atlantea tulita. This component includes designing and acquiring outreach materials.2) production and distribution of educational materials, such as posters (220), brochures (250), banners (4), notebooks (225), caps (200), stickers (500), and invitation cards (200), to inform and guide potential participants about restoring habitat conditions to benefit diurnal and nocturnal pollinators. 3) acquire from para LA naturaleza INC. Or propagate with landowner fidencio snchez 550 flowering native shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants attractive to pollinators, which will be distributed for educational purposes in the outreach events.4) identify potential partners for establishing phase 2 landowner agreements, including incentives and technical assistance, as part of the workshops.5) seek collaborations with local land management agencies, as well as environmental and community groups, to engage in the educational and outreach aspects of the proposal.
