Description

Establish a five-year statewide partnership (20252030) between the U.S. Fish and wildlife services partners for fish and wildlife program and the south dakota grassland coalition in support of the south dakota working prairies conservation initiative. The initiatives core objective is to implement voluntary, producer-led habitat conservation on private and tribal lands that aligns with the missions of both partnering entities and contributes to the long-term sustainability of south dakotas grasslands and wetlands.over the full period of performance, the partnership aims to implement conservation practices on approximately 20,000 acres of working landscapes, including grassland, wetland, and riparian habitats. This work will directly benefit declining grassland wildlife species, improve soil health and water quality, and support regenerative grazing systems. Subject to the availability of fiscal year 2025 funds, the USFWS anticipates providing sufficient funding to support approximately 7,000 acres of conservation. Subject to the availability of future funds, the USFWS will incrementally invest in additional habitat projects to achieve the five-year goal of 20,000 acres.focus and priorities:a strong emphasis will be placed on restoring, enhancing, and creating high-value wetland, grassland, and riparian habitats that serve as breeding and migratory stopover habitat for a wide range of bird guilds, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and grassland songbirds. These habitats are not only critical to wildlife but are also essential for the sustainability of working ranchlands and rural communities.
