THE EASTERN BLACK RAIL (LATERALLUS JAMAICENSIS JAMAICENSIS) IS A THREATENED SPECIES THAT HAS EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT POPULATION DECLINES DUE TO HABITAT DEGRADATION. THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO CONDUCT AN ACOUSTICAL ASSESSMENT OF EASTERN BLACK RAIL HABITATS IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA, SPECIFICALLY IN WALTON, OKALOOSA, AND ESCAMBIA COUNTIES, DURING THE EASTERN BLACK RAIL BREEDING SEASON. USING AUTOMATED RECORDING UNITS (ARUS), TALL TIMBERS RESEARCH STATION STAFF WILL ESTABLISH AT LEAST 14 MONITORING SITES ACROSS APPROXIMATELY 680 ACRES OF HIGH MARSH AND SALT PANNE HABITATS, OPTIMIZING ACOUSTIC MONITORING WHILE MINIMIZING DISTURBANCE. OUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES INCLUDE IDENTIFYING BLRA PRESENCE, FILLING KNOWLEDGE GAPS RELATED TO THEIR OCCURRENCE, AND ASSESSING HABITAT MANAGEMENT AND RESTORATION NEEDS. THE RESULTS WILL INFORM HIGH-PRIORITY AREAS FOR FUTURE CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION EFFORTS, BENEFITING NOT ONLY THE EASTERN BLACK RAIL BUT ALSO OTHER SENSITIVE SPECIES SUCH AS THE PIPING PLOVER AND AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER. BY LEVERAGING EXISTING CONSERVATION FRAMEWORKS SUCH AS THE ATLANTIC COAST JOINT VENTURE AND OAA S FIREBIRD PROGRAM, THIS PROJECT AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING OF BLRA HABITATS AND SUPPORT STRATEGIC LAND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTING TO THE RECOVERY OF THIS ELUSIVE SPECIES AND THE PRESERVATION OF ITS CRITICAL MARSH ENVIRONMENTS.
