Cooperative Agreement F25AC01654
- This $100,000 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) will support the Institute for Regional Conservation's (IRC) efforts to restore habitat for the Miami tiger beetle and Bartram's scrub-hairstreak butterfly in the Richmond Pine Rocklands of Florida. The funding will leverage IRC's ongoing Pine Rockland Initiative, which aims to restore habitat and aid recovery of...
- This $231,652 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research initiative to manage invasive Caribbean pine and reduce wildfire risk in Puerto Rico. The project aims to create high-resolution maps of pine invasion and burn scars, predict future risks, and develop user-friendly applications for local agencies and communities. Key activities include deploying advanced AI models to locate individual Caribbean pine trees...
- This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey's National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CFDA 15.820) provides $137,288 to North Carolina State University, with a sub-award to the University of Puerto Rico, for a 2-year project titled "Invasive Vines - Host Interactions Vary Along Broad Environmental Gradients: Integrating Remote Sensing and Species Distribution Models to Understand Large-Scale Shifts Driven by Climate and Land-Use Change." The key...
- The Institute for Applied Ecology will receive $200,000 through a Cooperative Agreement awarded on July 12, 2022 by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 2. The funding supports work under the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program to increase the availability of native plant seed for restoration projects in four focus ecoregions in New Mexico. Specifically, the Institute for Applied Ecology will work to expand the supply of locally-adapted native seeds and plant...
- The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 awarded $955,000 under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation (CFDA 15.657) federal grant program to the State of Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources to support conservation efforts for endangered native plant species in Hawaii. Funding will support infrastructure upgrades and staffing increases at rare plant nurseries operated by the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife's Rare Plant Program through...
- This $1,200,000 federal Project Grant award from the USDA Forest Service under the Cooperative Forestry Assistance program (CFDA 10.664) will fund longleaf pine restoration and habitat enhancement projects on state, private, and tribal lands across the Southeast United States. The prime awardee, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), will work with sub-grantees including the American Bird Conservancy, The Nature Conservancy, The Longleaf Alliance, and the Land Trust For Louisiana to...
- This $1,220,321 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657) supports the University of Hawaii in establishing a native plant seed bank and supply chain to help build climate and invasive species resilience in habitats on Army installations and adjacent lands in Hawaii. The project aims to systematically collect seeds from common, locally-adapted native plant species that can serve as...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the United States Department of Agriculture awarded a $799,988 Project Grant to the University of Florida's Division of Sponsored Research under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310). The grant aims to improve climate resilience and preserve productivity in loblolly pine plantations, the most economically important timber species in the Southeastern U.S., which are threatened by more frequent...
- This $295,000 federal Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083), supports a collaborative research effort to develop bio-inspired, biodegradable, self-burying seed carriers for aerial forest regeneration. The key objectives are to: Address low germination and seedling establishment rates in aerial seeding by developing self-burying seed carriers. Explore the rational design of seed carriers to accommodate the unique...
- This $113,218 Cooperative Agreement award from the Department of the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), will support a project to address habitat restoration challenges in Hawaii. The primary objectives are to enhance innovation and success in forest restoration while also testing strategies to mitigate the impacts of intensified drought on restoration outcomes. The project plans to conduct a field experiment in the Kahuku...
THE INSTITUTE FOR REGIONAL CONSERVATION (IRC) PROPOSES TO DEMONSTRATE A NOVEL METHOD TO EFFICIENTLY INCREASE THE SPATIAL EXTENT OF GLOBALLY IMPERILED PINE ROCKLANDS ON THE MIAMI ROCK RIDGE, A HABITAT FOR NUMEROUS FEDERALLY THREATENED AND ENDANGERED PLANTS AND ANIMALS, WHICH HAS BEEN REDUCED TO 2 PERCENT OF ITS HISTORICAL RANGE OUTSIDE OF EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK. THIS WORK WILL BUILD ON GUIDANCE FOR PLANTING PINE ROCKLANDS INITIATED IN 2007 BY IRC (GANN 2007) AND UPDATED IN 2020 IN COLLABORATION WITH FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN (GANN ET AL. 2020). THIS GUIDANCE HAS BEEN SUPPLEMENTED BY THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL DIRECT SEED TRIALS IN PINE ROCKLANDS (GANN AND SMITH 2019), THE CONCEPTUALIZATION BY IRC OF THE MODIFICATION OF THE APPLIED NUCLEATION APPROACH TO PINE ROCKLANDS IN 2020 (GANN AND DUTRA 2025), AND SUBSEQUENT INFORMAL TRIALS AT SEVERAL SITES IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. TO DATE NO FORMAL TRIALS INCORPORATING BOTH APPLIED NUCLEATION AND DIRECT SEED PLOTS IN A UNIFIED PROJECT HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
