Description
Manage and restore an important southern appalachian BOG in alleghany county, north carolina to benefit the threatened BOG turtle, proposed endangered eastern hellbender, and several state-listed plants. Activities to restore wetland hydrology and expand the size of the wetland include plugging ditches and exploring the need for and potentially removing fill dirt and breaking drainage tiles. Management activities will also include removal of non-native invasive plants and woody vegetation to improve wetland hydrology and to create a mosaic of microhabitats that includes open sunny patches needed by BOG turtles and some plant species. Lastly, a riparian buffer will be planted along portions of the adjacent creek to stabilize the creek banks. Work will benefit plants and wildlife by expanding BOG habitat for species that require wetlands and stabilizing the creek banks to prevent erosion loss of soil from the site and to alleviate creek sedimentation. Furthermore, work will benefit people by expanding the wetland and replanting a stream buffer, which in turn will help absorb flood water, recharge ground water drinking water and reduce sedimentation in the creek.
