Description

Approximately one third of the river corridor in new jersey is preserved within the wallkill river national wildlife refuge. The high density of BOG turtles utilizing this region has qualified IT as a subunit within the broader hudson housatonic recovery unit of the northern populations management plan. Increasing connectivity between parcels that are actively managed for turtles will help mitigate threats including loss of nesting and brumation habitats and help to ensure populations have the resources they need to persist. We believe our work will have a significant impact on rare turtle conservation in new jersey by focusing outreach and restoration efforts on the wallkill river watershed.
