About this award
This $620,300 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Fish Passage Program (CFDA 15.685) supports a project to remove a pair of culverts in Chimacum Creek, Washington. The project aims to re-establish access to 2.59 miles of significant upstream habitat for coho, fall chum, steelhead trout, and other anadromous fish species. The existing culverts have a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife passability rating of only 33%, limiting access to the upper portions of Chimacum Creek and its tributaries. By removing this barrier, the project will advance the Summer Chum Salmon Recovery Plan for the Hood Canal and Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca region. The Jefferson County Public Works Department, the awardee, will execute the design phase of this critical fish passage restoration project over the period from September 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026.
Description
The project will support the summer chum salmon recovery plan for the hood canal eastern strait of juan DE fuca by RE-establishing access to a significant portion of chimacum creek. The pair of culverts have a wdfw passibility rating of 33%. The stream velocity and elevation of the culverts are limiting coho, fall chum, steelheadtrout, and other anadromous fish species from accessing the upper portions of chimacum creekand its tributaries. The removal of the barrier will add 2.59 miles of significant upstream habitat, and as IT is sited low in the watershed IT is a crucial step in furthering the restoration of chimacumcreek and its tributaries
