THE BOONE COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT S (BCCD) MISSION AND PURPOSE TIES DIRECTLY INTO HOW IT MANAGES THE 4400 ACRES OF PUBLIC LAND IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR. MOST OF THESE ACRES ARE MANAGED AS REFUGE FOR THE NATIVE FLORA AND FAUNA OF THE NORTHERN ILLINOIS REGION.THE NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT AT THE BCCD HAS PLACED A PRIORITY ON HABITAT MANAGEMENT AND ESTABLISHMENT AT KINNIKINNICK CREEK CONSERVATION AREA. THIS IS DUE TO THE HIGH QUALITY HABITAT THAT ALREADY EXISTS ON THE SITE, AS WELL AS THE POTENTIAL TO EXPAND ON EXISTING HABITAT. THE BCCD HAS LIMITED RESOURCES AND CANNOT MANAGE THE AMOUNT OF HABITAT NECESSARY WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. BECAUSE OF THIS, OTHER SOURCES MUST BE PURSUED. IN THESE EFFORTS, THE BCCD HAS BECOME VERY EFFECTIVE IN LEVERAGING, ALLOWING FOR THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF HABITAT ESTABLISHMENT AS POSSIBLE. THE BCCD TAKES GREAT PRIDE IN THE EFFICIENT USE OF FUNDS AVAILABLE AND IS VERY CONSCIOUS OF PARTNERSHIPS ESPECIALLY WHEN FUNDING IS INVOLVED.THE CONSEQUENCE OF THIS PROJECT NOT BEING FUNDED IS THE LOST POTENTIAL, AND AT BEST, THE POSTPONEMENT OF CREATING HIGH QUALITY HABITAT THAT WOULD SUPPORT BOTH THE RUSTY PATCHED BUMBLE BEE AND MONARCH BUTTERFLY.
