Description

This project will provide trust resource public benefits through improving upland woodland habitat for the benefit of multiple federal trust species, including the endangered golden-cheeked warbler, migratory birds, montezuma quail, and pollinators, including the monarch butterfly.brush management on 140 acres (reference map attached) of upland habitat to thin ashe juniper and other woody plants invading grassland and woodland habitats at undesirable densities. Brush management will involve cutting trees with a skid-steer loaded equipped with a hydraulic shearing device, by mulching with a forestry mulcher, or by hand with power saws, but not by pushing with a bulldozer. Targeted juniper density after treatment is 50 percent in a mosaic pattern. Mechanical treatment may be modified with USFWS project officer approval. Ashe juniper (cedar) can simply be cut and allowed to lay in place. Mesquite and red-berry juniper and other brush (sprouting species) will need to be cut and immediately treated with an appropriate herbicide (basal-bark cut-stump treatment is recommended).
