About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service under the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program (CFDA 15.631) provides $200,000 to the Klamath Watershed Partnership to analyze and restore the Fishhole and Pole Creek watersheds in Oregon. The initial Phase I effort will assess priority areas for restoration and watershed function, including analyzing grazing and cattle management impacts. Planned restoration activities may include constructing a defined single to multi-threaded channel, installing habitat features like large woody debris and beaver dam analogues, and fencing and revegetating the riparian area. This multi-year project (Aug 2024 - Jul 2029) aims to address the heavily degraded condition of Fishhole Creek and reduce sediment inputs into the Sprague River, a major cold water contributor. The Klamath Watershed Partnership, a non-profit organization with extensive experience implementing federal conservation and restoration grants, will lead the project's implementation.

Description

Phase I of this project will be to analyze fishhole and pole creeks to understand priority areas for restoration and watershed function and grazing and cattle management. This property has 2.55 miles of fishhole creek and roughly 0.90 miles of pole creek which is a tributary to fishhole creek. Coordination of below and above landowners is also factored into the potential restoration actions of this area leading to an unprecedented potential for restoration in the fishhole creek watershed which is a major contributor of cold water and sediments into the sprague river.currently fishhole creek is heavily degraded and is without a defined channel within this reach resulting in large amounts of erosion and increases in sediment input into the sprague river. Once the initial analysis is completed potential restoration projects include construction of a defined single to multithreaded channel instead of the current dozens of undefined channels. Other potential projects include constructing or placing habitat features including large woody debris and beaver DAM analogues and boulders. Fencing and restoration of the riparian area is also a large component of this project.
