Description
The specific objectives are to 1 maintain a genetic repository of mexican wolf and other canid samples 2 maintain a genetic database and provide genetic analysis of ancestry and parentage of nuclear DNA microsatellite genotypes from all sampled individuals 3 develop and transition to a single nucleotide polymorphism SNP database 4 monitor genetic diversity and inbreeding levels in the wild population and 5 apply a noninvasive genetic fecal DNA genetic monitoring approach across the mexican wolf experimental population area. Samples including blood tissue buccal swab and scat will be collected and provided by the mexican wolf recovery program. DNA fingerprints will be generated from each sample type using both nuclear DNA microsatellite and SNP markers. This data will be used to distinguish between individuals and assess the genetic ancestry of and determine the parentage for newly sampled individuals. This data will also be used to monitor levels of genetic diversity and inbreeding in the wild population. This information is critical to the continued recovery of the endangered mexican wolf.
