Description

The broad goal of our study is to fill basic knowledge gaps in mallard and mexican duck spatial ecology and behavioral interactions in the southwest U.S.A. An enhanced knowledge of these topics will enable more effective wetland management to mitigate adverse behavioral interactions or hybridization risks to mexican ducks. Specific objectives include: 1. Work with USFWS to deploy GPS satellite transmitters on mallards and mexican ducks in southeast arizona. 2. Analyze incoming GPS satellite transmitter data to evaluate space use patterns, such as home range size, movement distances, and resource selection as pertains to natural and artificial wetlands. 3. Investigate behavioral interactions of mallards and mexican ducks as they relate to habitat features and climate.
