Description

Sellers ford and john coleman road stream crossings are existing low water crossings consisting of long road approaches with inadequate bridge openings required for stream discharge and bedload transport. Sellers ford bridge is approximately 12 wide and 20 long. The huzzah creek channel width is approximately 270. The estimated channel opening is 5%. As a result, bedload is depositing upstream from the crossing causing both a meander compression and contributing to an estimated 700 of streambank erosion. The downstream side of the crossing is experiencing channel degradation and over-widening. John coleman road bridge is approximately 12 wide and 40 long. The huzzah creek channel width is approximately 370. The estimated channel opening is 11%. Again, the stream is depositing significant amounts of bedload upstream from the crossing. Immediately downstream from the crossing, channel degradation, over-widening, and an estimated 800 of streambank erosion is occurring. Both existing stream crossings are negatively impacting channel morphology, aquatic habitat diversity, and believed to be velocity barriers for benthic aquatic organisms. The proposed actions including using heavy equipment to remove the existing structures. Sellers ford has an approved engineering plan and drawings to install a new span bridge and stabilize the upstream eroding streambank. The john coleman road will need engineering plans and drawing to design and construct an appropriately sized span bridge. The new bottomless span bridges will restore aquatic organism passage and stream morphology reconnecting approximately 25 miles in huzzah creek. In addition, the span bridges should not flood as often and reduce maintenance costs for the crawford county commission.
