Description
The camp takes place for approximately two to three weeks in august through mid-september, at a site reached by a 20-minute boat ride from the village. The camp typically serves about 150 lnupiaq students in grades K-12 in the community of selawik. Activities at the camp include caribou and moose hunting, checking fish nets, cutting and drying fish, berry picking, traditional lnupiaq games and stories, learning outdoor survival skills, fish biology, river ecology, aquatic insect collections, plant identification, nature photography, permafrost measurement, boating safety, firearm safety, and promotion of respect for land and culture. The camp is a cooperative effort by the native village of selawik and the selawik national wildlife refuge (U.S. Fish wildlife service) most years, we have additional partners such as the local school, the borough government, the regional native corporation, or local businesses. All these partners place a high priority on engaging youth in outdoor activities that root them in the traditional culture and natural environment of northwest alaska.
