This aligns with the goals of the SoCal Urban Wildlife Refuge Project to engage students in conservation activities and promote concern for the natural world. The award date is August 1, 2024, with a completion date of July 31, 2025.

Description

Research shows there is a direct correlation between socioeconomic status and access to nature and outdoor spaces. The lower the median income in an urban area the less likely that students will have access to nature. This proposed partnership with the U.S. Fish and wildlife service and the zoological society of SAN diego doing business as SAN diego ZOO wildlife alliance will respond to this challenge by connecting 5TH grade students from title I schools in southern SAN diego county to our native wilderness through interactive classroom programming and immersive field trips to the local marsh habitat. Our program aligns with the goals of the socal urban wildlife refuge project by engaging students in conservation activities that promote in them a concern and passion to protect the natural world. We will concentrate our recruiting efforts in the districts with the highest percentage of students eligible for free and reduced price meals which is correlated with higher rates of poverty.
