THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO CREATE RESILIENT WILDLIFE HABITAT FOR THE HACKMATACK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE THROUGH ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION AT OPENLANDS OTREBLA PROPERTY WITHIN THE REFUGE. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPRESS INVASIVE SPECIES THROUGH ESTABLISHMENT OF A COVER CROP ON 65 ACRES OF LAND THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY FARMED. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT WETLAND RESTORATION ON APPROXIMATELY 22 ACRES OF DEGRADED WETLAND THROUGH INVASIVE SPECIES CONTROL. PROJECT ACTIVITIES DELIVERABLES INCLUDE A PRESCRIBED BURN, PLANTING OF A COVER CROP, HERBICIDE TREATMENTS FOR INVASIVE WETLAND SPECIES, MOWING OF INVASIVE SPECIES AND A PLANT INVENTORY. THE PROJECT WILL IMPROVE HABITAT FOR IMPORTANT SPECIES IN THE AREA SUCH AS BLANDINGS TURTLE, AND RUSTY PATCHED BUMBLEBEE. IT WILL ALSO SUPPORT FRIENDS OF HACKMATACKS WORK TO RESTORE WETLANDS AT OTREBLA.
