Description
Forested habitats at mid elevations also support the greatest species richness and abundance of migratory songbirds in the region. Among the songbirds that depend on mid elevation forests during the non breeding period are several steeply declining species, including the olive sided flycatcher, golden winged warbler cerulean warbler and canada warbler. Given the above, a diverse set of stakeholders representing over 79 organizations institutions from across central and northern south america were brought together in a series of conservation standards workshops in early 2021 to create a conservation investment strategy for mid elevation forests. Among the resulting objectives of the plan was the protection of habitat for the three target species (golden winged, cerulean and canada warblers) as a strategy for halting declines. Deforestation is ongoing in the region and urgent action is required to avoid further habitat loss. To combat this loss, one of the objectives of the conservation investment strategy is to increase the coverage of remaining mid elevation forests within protected areas to 30 of the total area and reduce deforestation rates to 1 of the current forest area over the next 10 years. To contribute to this objective, this project will undertake a rigorous characterization of the remaining mid elevation forests through a participatory process with local communities and national and regional environment authorities, and undertake the necessary steps to create one new protected area. To narrow down the geographical scope of the project, the eastern andes of colombia were selected, given their links with declining populations of canada and cerulean warbler.
